Instructional Paraprofessionals

Instructional paraprofessionals are not required to hold any licensure but are required to work under the supervision of a licensed educator. Instructional paraprofessionals may be assigned to work in a single classroom, in multiple classrooms, provide small group tutoring, support one student or be assigned to work with an instructional program. Check with your local president or collective bargaining agreement for specific roles, responsibilities and requirements for continuing employment.

Instructional paraprofessionals who are employed in a Title 1 program or in a school with a school-wide Title 1 program are required to meet minimum education requirements:

Title I paraprofessionals must also work under the direct supervision of a teacher.

Professional Learning for Instructional Paraprofessionals

Instructional paraprofessionals are not required to maintain an active and valid license. Some schools or districts may encourage instructional paraprofessionals to participate in ongoing professional learning each year or document a specific number of hours of training. Any professional learning requirements will be outlined in your local collective bargaining agreement or as part of district policies.
